Students at Oilfields High School (OHS) recently welcomed John Barlow, Foothills Member of Parliament (MP), for a tour showcasing the school’s innovative programs and student-led initiatives.

Barlow joined school staff and trustees from Foothills School Divisionfor a student-led tour, showcasing a sustainable agriculture project, the Vertical Farm Initiative

The indoor net-zero growing unit produces vegetables, herbs, and microgreens year-round inside a fully converted sea‑can.

The project aims to operate without negative environmental impacts, using responsible stewardship of energy, water, and soil.

Students from Grades 7 through 12 are involved in the project, from planting, watering, lighting and harvesting, to marketing, and business operations.

The initiative is designed to provide hands-on experience in agriculture, sustainability, business, and entrepreneurship while helping students build practical workplace skills and community connections.

The project also supports local food security efforts through community partnerships and donations to local food banks.

The program is supported by sponsors, community organizations, and government funding opportunities.

During the tour, Barlow emphasized the importance of employable skills and shared his appreciation for seeing these skills prioritized through hands‑on learning opportunities.

To conclude the visit, Barlow was presented with a framed, hand‑drawn sketch of OHS signed by students and staff.
