Bonaire Project To Test Containerised CEA Under Local Conditions
Hippotainer christening marks next phase
A containerised controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) system has been christened ahead of its planned deployment to Bonaire, marking the next stage of a project focused on local food production, resource efficiency and decentralised growing.
More than 40 investors, scientists, suppliers, local entrepreneurs, representatives and other stakeholders attended the event. Guided tours allowed participants to explore the container's two growing systems: Deep Water Culture (DWC) layers and a vertical growing wall with multiple plant sites.
Guests also sampled crops grown inside the container, including basil used in a Caprese appetizer and lettuce served with melon and prosciutto.
From demonstration to field testing
The event included discussions on potential applications for containerised CEA, from remote communities and hospitals to locations where reliable access to fresh produce can be challenging. Participants also explored the system's potential as a research and learning platform for collecting data on crop performance, growing methods, logistics and resource use.
